A Digital Archive

What is an archive?

An archive is a collection of historical artifacts generally organized around a central theme. Archives can be both physical and digital. Archives are helpful for preserving history in a centralized place. History is continuously being made, so you will find artifacts from the past and from the present in this archive.

This digital archive is modeled after the in-person exhibit titled Grace: The History of Black Churches in Cambridge. The in-person exhibit was hosted by the Cambridge Museum of History and Culture in the Kendall Center in February, 2025.

How do I navigate this archive?

This archive is made up of items and item sets.

An item is a digital version of an artifact and the information used to describe and label the artifact. This archive labels items by their title, creator, date, description, and format.

An item set is a group of items organized around a sub-theme. This archive organizes the items by what church the items belong to. Each church has its own item set, which is its own set of archival items.

Each church also has its own page with a description of the history of the church and access to the church's archival items.
